On Actually Finishing a Mobile Adventure Game
There's a quiet pleasure in a game that ends. So much of mobile is built around never finishing — endless loops, daily logins, content that stretches forever. Adventure games are one of the last places you reliably get a proper ending.
Playing Hollow Lantern reminded me how much I value this. It's maybe five hours long, every scene earns its place, and when the credits rolled I felt something, which almost never happens with a phone game. No filler, no padding, just a story told and finished.
Short games ask something of you that long ones don't: they trust you'll show up for the whole thing. In return they can be tighter, stranger and more personal.
Next time you're browsing, don't dismiss a game for being short. Sometimes 'complete' is worth far more than 'endless'.
