Why Turn-Based Combat Belongs on Your Phone

Real-time action on a touchscreen is always a compromise — no buttons, greasy fingers over the action, thumbs blocking the view. Turn-based combat sidesteps all of that, and it's why so many of my favourite phone RPGs use it.

When the game waits for you, the touchscreen becomes a strength. You tap exactly what you want, when you want, and there's no fumbling. It also fits how we actually play on phones: in bursts, easily paused, never punishing you for looking up mid-fight.

The best turn-based systems layer in positioning and timing so it never becomes mindless. Reading an enemy's telegraph and countering it feels great whether you have five seconds or five minutes to decide.

If you've written off turn-based games as slow, try one on your phone specifically. The format and the hardware suit each other far better than the flashier alternatives.
